Birdwatch Ireland invite to take part in garden bird survey

The Irish Garden Bird Survey

Winter is quickly approaching and this a time of major change for the birdlife of Ireland. Irish birds now need to find food when it is more scarce and seek shelter from the elements.

In a world with less and less habitat for birds and biodiversity, many species have taken to our gardens as a refuge. It is vital that we track and protect these garden birds so that future generations can enjoy their vibrant colours and melodious songs.

That is why Birdwatch Ireland leads the initiative to survey these feathered neighbours.

The Irish Garden Bird Survey begins on November 25 and invites households across the country to count the different bird species that visit their gardens. The survey lasts 13 weeks but it is not necessary to take part every week, only as many as you can.

Participants are asked to check their gardens for birds for only a few minutes each week. The highest count of each species is recorded and submitted to Birdwatch Ireland by email, post or online.

Registration is not necessary and you will find all the information you need to get started on birdwatchireland.ie.

If you have an interest in birds and would like to get involved at a local level, you can join the Birdwatch Ireland Westmeath Branch. This local group holds talks, outings and surveys in the county.
