Josef Locke's effects go under the hammer at Usher Auctions

A bumper auction featuring the personal effects of famed Irish tenor Josef Locke is set to take place at Usher Auctions on December 2. The sale promises over 1,200 lots, including quality antiques and collectibles, with a special focus on items from Locke’s estate.

Among the standout pieces is Locke’s "Challen" Baby Grand Piano, Lot 115, estimated at €300-€600. This unique item includes three yellow glass castor cups used to elevate the piano by an extra two inches. Another highlight is Lot 627, an Early 19th Century Irish Fusee Wall Clock, intricately carved with Irish motifs such as a shamrock, a setter, a round tower, and a harp. This impressive clock carries the same estimate of €300-€600.

Locke, known for his powerful voice and stage presence, left behind a fascinating collection of awards, presentations, photographs, and memorabilia. Lot 868, for instance, is a framed photograph of Locke mounted on his horse, Paddy. Other notable items include a 1974 Magilligan prison art harp inscribed to Locke, as well as music folders, 19th-century artworks, and fine furniture.

This final auction of the year is not limited to Locke’s possessions. A wide variety of items will be available, including garden furniture, Waterford glassware, antiquarian books, and an exceptional Strahan-made Rosewood cabinet. Viewing is highly recommended, with opportunities to inspect the items from November 28 to December 2.
