Westmeath Libraries introduce new walking pole fitness scheme
Westmeath Libraries has teamed up with Westmeath Sports Partnership to encourage our community to get walking and stay active.
They are set to introduce new Activator Poles which can be borrowed from your local library.
Activator poles are an excellent way to enhance your fitness, improve mobility, and boost strength and balance. They are used in a forward position to provide stability, support, and confidence, especially for those concerned about falling.
The activator pole lending scheme will be supported by several resources for participants including special ‘taster’ session, booklets and leaflets and videos.
“Research has shown walking offers many health benefits including improving mood, reducing stress, and other physical gains," said Tony Wheat, Westmeath Sports Partnership Co-ordinator.
"Westmeath Sports Partnership has worked with many community groups to show how activator poles can be used as aids to motivate and encourage those who struggle with balance and mobility. We hope that this partnership with Westmeath Libraries will allow more individuals a fresh new opportunity for physical exercise”.
Paula Leavy McCarthy, County Librarian said: “The activator poles lending scheme is a wonderful addition to our Library of Things, expanding and complementing the range of material available to borrow for free through your local Westmeath Library.”
Cathaoirleach Liam McDaniel invited members of the public to take part in the scheme.
“Westmeath Libraries and Westmeath Sports Partnership have provided an excellent opportunity to avail of free resources such as the activator poles and the accompanying videos. These allow people to get out and about in our beautiful county and take advantage of facilities such as our greenways,” he said.
The initiative is supported by Healthy Ireland and is part of the overall campaign to Get Ireland Walking.
To borrow activator poles, you must be over 18 and a member of Westmeath Libraries. Membership is free! If you’re not a member yet, visit your local library and sign up today.
