Carberry questions Commission trade chief on Mercosur deal

Fine Gael MEP Nina Carberry has raised "critical concerns" with the European Commission regarding the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. Speaking at a hearing of the European Parliament's Trade Committee, MEP Carberry underscored the potential implications of the deal for the future of Irish and European agriculture.

During her interaction with Sabine Weyand, Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, MEP Carberry questioned the Commission’s intention to 'split' the deal and sought clarity on the availability of the full draft text. She expressed disappointment, noting that Ms Weyand failed to provide any answers on these crucial matters.

"The EU-Mercosur trade agreement raises serious issues," the Fine Gael MEP said. "How can the European Commission justify supporting a deal that risks undermining our high environmental standards, while threatening the livelihoods of our farmers? At a time when farming faces a succession crisis and rising regulatory burdens, Mercosur feels like the straw that will break the camel's back."

MEP Carberry also highlighted the lack of transparency surrounding the negotiations, stating, "it is not good enough that we are hearing bits and pieces about these negotiations through the grapevine."

MEP Carberry further emphasised the broader implications for the agricultural sector, aligning her comments with the Strategic Dialogue on Agriculture.

"Trade openness is important, but it must be balanced with a level playing field for sustainable, high-quality production. The future of our agricultural sector depends on aligning trade policy with sustainability and innovation."
