Toastmasters keep up tradition

Keeping up tradition, Mullingar Toastmasters heard a speech from Mullingar and District Soroptimist Empowering Girls Public Speaking Competition entrant, Entiona Muga.

A rising tide lifts all boats, was the sentiment at the most recent Mullingar Toastmasters meeting, where they hosted the competition entrants for the public speaking contents organised by Soroptimist International, an annual tradition the two local groups share.

There was a full room for the meeting (26 in attendance, 18 members and eight guests).

Entiona Muga from Loreto College, Mullingar will be going forward to represent Mullingar and District Soroptimists in the national final of the competition on April 5, 2025, in Castlebar.

Entiona’s speech is on the topic of Friendship and Volunteering, she delivered it with warmth, confidence and professionalism for the Mullingar Toastmasters, and they wish her luck in the next stage of the competition!

Niamh Tubridy followed Entiona and delivered a speech influenced by her current Pathways objectives on conflict resolution. Pathways is an online learning platform available to members which helps to improve public speaking with structured supports.

Niamh’s speech considered an article on mediation she read and she reflected on the different personal characteristics that might have a positive influence on conflict resolution and how the audience might be able to work on developing those.

The final speech of the evening, by club president, Deirdre Bigley, centered on consent and used the idea of drinking tea as a humorous and accessible vehicle to convey when consent is being clearly and freely given and when it is not. As part of her objectives, Deirdre will have to deliver another speech incorporating the feedback received. All look forward to hearing that.

Anasiria Garza entertained with Table Topics, the part of the meeting aimed at helping members to build their impromptu speaking skills wherein they are asked a question and offered up to two minutes in which to respond. Anasiria thoughtfully put together topics which would allow members to get to know each other better.

The next meeting of Mullingar Toastmasters, on December 12 at the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar (8pm), is also the Christmas party. Guests are welcome to join an evening of festive cheer (and finger food).
