Kerrigan's 5K event supports Meals on Wheels

The 20th Anniversary of the Kerrigan’s St Stephen’s Day 5K was another good success.

It has always been a great community event, with a lot of familiar faces every year. Over €50,000 has been raised over the years for various local charities.

This year’s charity was Meals on Wheels, Mullingar and there was a great turnout in support of a very worthy cause. St Dominic’s Community Council is a limited company based in Sunnyside, College Street, Mullingar, Co Westmeath. The company was set up to provide a Meals on Wheels Service and low cost accommodation in a small number of one bed apartments for those in need in our community, in particular the elderly.

Fresh meals are prepared and cooked on site each day and delivered to recipients in Mullingar, Delvin, Castlepollard, Milltownpass, Rochfortbridge, Castletown Geoghegan and Ballynacargy. A small number of local people, referrals from the HSE, collect their meals at the centre.

The event is always a lovely morning and has become part of people's Christmas traditions, something which organisers say is always amazing and such a privilege.

Marie Kiernan had the idea for the walk 20 years ago and she has been there every year since and is the real driving force behind the event.

This year the organisers would like to thank Kieran Dodrill of Westmeath Sports Partnershi; Greg Duggan from Mullingar Harriers; O'Reilly’s Rathowen; Order of Malta; Niamh and Tara for doing the times, and the girls in Kerrigans for all their work with teas, coffees and baked goods. Special thanks to all who supported the event over 20 years..

The first over the line this year was - men: Padraig Savage, 19.09; women: Laura Fitzpatrick, 23.37; U18: Hugh Kearney, 22.25.
