Charity hurling match lifts Stephen Corroon fund

The Westmeath charity hurling game on Saturday raised more than €2,500 for injured Mullingar cyclist Stephen Corroon. A good crowd turned out to watch the established Westmeath senior hurlers take on a second string selection and the game gave supporters a first opportunity to see Seoirse Bulfin’s men in action, while providing another boost to a worthy cause.

Stephen Corroon, a member of Lakeside Wheelers, fell from his bike while participating in the Orwell Wheelers Randonnée in the Dublin Mountains on the 2024 May bank holiday weekend.

The 41-year-old father of two suffered a severe spinal injury, leaving him with a permanent neurological deficit and without the use of his arms or legs.

He spent nine weeks in a specialist spinal injuries unit in the Mater Hospital, before being moved to Tullamore Regional Hospital and then to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

His condition means he needs equipment, long-term help from occupational therapists, and home adaptations to manage his care.

Mr Corroon is currently reliant on others for every aspect of his daily life, including self-care, feeding, and personal hygiene.

Lakeside Wheelers raised €68,000 in less than two days in an initial fundraiser and there have been other fundraisers too; the aim is to reach €200,000.
