Upgrade works at TEG Cusack Park
Westmeath GAA’s headquarters on Friars Mill Road, Mullingar is undergoing further development this year after €46,878 was spent on the stadium in 2024. Head of Operations, Patrick Doherty explained Westmeath GAA is keen to improve the county grounds for the benefit of players and supporters.
“The upgrading work at TEG Cusack Park continued this year with the completion of the installation of the recycled plastic benches prior to Easter. We are really pleased with how this work has turned out and hope that it makes attending games in the ground a little more comfortable for our patrons,” he states.
“Over the next couple of months more upgrading works are taking place – the dressing rooms will be modernised, and work will also be done on the public toilet blocks. Every bit helps and we hope these upgrades make the experience of players and spectators a little better.”
Success of Westmeath Scór na nÓg
Westmeath’s Irish Language and Cultural Officer, Des Cawley recounted a remarkable time for Scór na nÓg in the county.
The following were winners in Westmeath: Rince Foirne/ Figure Dancing: St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge; Amhránaíocht Aonair/Solo Singing: Darragh McCabe, Mullingar Shamrocks; Aithriseoireacht/Recitation: Alanna Corroon, The Downs; Bailéad-Ghrúpa/Ballad Group: Moate All Whites; Tráth na gCeist/Quiz: The Downs; Nuachleas/Novelty Act: The Downs; Ceol Uirlise/Instrumental Music: Bunbrosna; Rince Seit/Set Dancing: The Downs.
The Leinster semi-final was held in The Tullamore GAA Centre on November 16, followed by the Leinster final on November 30 in Summerhill Community Centre. All Westmeath representatives performed excellently on both days with a total of six Leinster titles being claimed by Darragh McCabe, Mullingar Shamrocks, Solo Singing; Alanna Corroon, The Downs, Recitation; Moate All Whites Ballad Group; The Downs Novelty Act; Bunbrosna Instrumental Music; and The Downs Set Dancing.
The Downs quiz team narrowly missed out on a Leinster title also but have qualified for the All-Ireland final in January. St Mary’s Rochfortbridge were surely very close on the night to claiming a title also but didn’t get the nod from the judges in the end.
The All-Ireland will be held in The Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan on Saturday, January 25. It is testament to the dedication of Westmeath's junior competitors and their mentors that the county will be competing in seven out of eight disciplines at All-Ireland level - a remarkable achievement.
Earlier in the year, the St Joseph’s set dancers won a Leinster Scór title.
