Raharney Camogie Club celebrates 120th Anniversary

The Raharney Camogie Club has celebrated its 120th Anniversary with a special event at the club grounds in Joristown and on the day held a walk in memory of the late Liz Shaw.

The event came together very organically. The club was very keen to remember their wonderful friend and celebrate camogie and it was decided that because of Liz’s dedication to camogie that they should run both together.

After talking to Liz's family and hearing how grateful they were for the care that the Milford Care Centre, Limerick gave to Liz and her family during that difficult time, the Raharney camogie club thought it fitting that they have a donation box in their honour. A massive crowd turned out for the walk and their generous donations have raised over €3,000.

The club would like to thank everyone who donated.

Both before and after the walk, great crowds came through the clubhouse for refreshments and to look back on the history of the club. The club is grateful to everyone who provided memorabilia for the day. It was wonderful to see older photos, paper clippings, medals, trophies, soaring stars, jerseys and cups on display. A huge thank you to Maureen Staunton Ahearn for putting together 10 beautifully framed collages of each year of our historic 10-in-a-row.

While tinged with sadness still over the loss of their beloved Liz, the people came together to celebrate a fantastic club and community. They will always remember their very dear friend Liz Shaw.

She touched the lives of so many people during her playing and coaching years with the club and has left a lasting legacy.

People were very keen to recognise that and the event proved a great success.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, John Weir said the club is delighted with the response from the community.

“It was a big event and a very important one for the club. We are very grateful to all who have contributed to the fundraising for the Milford Care Centre and the 120-year celebration proved a great success also.

“There was a lot of memorabilia on display, items and photos that we hadn’t seen in years,” he said.

“Liz Shaw was such a great lady and the impact she made on people’s lives has been extraordinary. There was a fundraising event called the 12 dips which ran during December and it concluded on New Year’s Eve at Lough Owel, where there was another great turnout.

“It has been wonderful to see such a fantastic level of support for this.”
