Annual blessing of animals, land and livestock
An annual tradition at the Carmelite Church, Moate, on Friday January 17, the Feast of St Anthony Abbot, is the Blessing of Animals and Farm Produce. People travel from all over Ireland to have pets or farm animals and produce blessed. Blessings started after the 10am Mass on Friday and continued till after the 7.15pm Mass. During the 10am Mass, new Icon of St Anthony was blessed and the congregation prayed that it will be a powerful intercession for people and the protection of their animals and prosperity of their lands. The icon was painted over two months before Christmas by the iconographers of St Elisabeth Convent, Minsk, Belarus.
