Presentation students show huge heart on stage
The standing ovation at the conclusion of the performance of Braveheart of the Wild by sixth classes at Presentation Senior School in Mullingar Arts Centre last Thursday evening was well deserved.
Working with tutors from the arts centre, Ms Nally’s and Mr Fox’s sixth classes began rehearsals in September and had weekly sessions on Tuesdays till December. In January, they intensified their preparations and had daily rehearsals.
Braveheart of the Wild is a musical production of the well-known Jungle Story (made famous on screen as the Jungle Book). This year more than 20 schools from the region (not confined to the Mullingar area, or even Westmeath) took part in the Mullingar Arts Centre Musical Theatre project, which incorporates dance, singing and drama. It is a 15-week programme that culminates in the show being staged as a full production, with props, costumes, sound, mics, lights and an experienced stage crew.
The programme is designed to help children develop their artistic, creative and physical skills. It also allows them to move from page to stage.
Last week, Presentation Senior was one of the schools who played to a packed auditorium and an appreciative audience of family and friends.
Following the show, Claire Dorr, school principal, began her remarks by saying she’s not often stuck for words… and she wasn’t! She offered thanks firstly to the young performers, who she said were brilliant, from their first days at her school in third class. She praised them for doing an outstanding job, from the start of the programme last year to the show on the night.
She also expressed gratitude to the tutors and other staff from the arts centre, to members of staff from the school and to the parents and families of the young performers.
