Raharney's 10-in-a-row winners honoured
The Raharney camogie club held a special celebration to honour the teams who have won the last ten Westmeath senior camogie titles on Saturday in the Village Barn, Tyrrellspass.
The occasion proved a wonderful celebration and generated a real feel-good factor ahead of the club playing season. Raharney Camogie Club chairman, John Weir said it was great to have such a positive gathering and praised the hosts for the manner in which the evening was organised.
“David Smyth and staff at The Village Barn did a wonderful job and it proved a great venue for our celebration. It was wonderful to celebrate 10-in-a row and also to remember the late Liz Shaw. There was a lot of emotion on the night,” he said.
“It was very good to have so many in attendance and the venue was just ideal for us.”
There were presentations to the captains of the ten in-a-row winners, including Pamela Greville, Andrina ‘Tiny’ Doyle, Rachel O’Malley, Laura and Aoife Doherty, Fiona Leavy, Anna Weir and Katie Coleman. These presentations were made by Karen Goldrick chairperson of Westmeath camogie.
There were presentations to the minor side by the minor manager Camillus McCauley.
The manager of the senior camogie Stephen Quinn presented the medals to the senior team following last year’s success.
John Weir is in his second year as chairman of the club and is extremely proud of what has been achieved over the years.
“We are after winning a lot of titles, some of them very narrowly and the players have shown great dedication. We have a great committee involved also. We lost 13 finals on the trot and people tend to forget that, but we are now enjoying a golden period for the club,” he said.
The chairman praised the successful underage structure which is continually feeding in new players.
“We have a lot of good young players breaking through and they are gelling very well.
“It’s a credit to the players; they are giving great service to Westmeatn and coming back to the club and serving it superbly also, which takes a lot of commitment,” he said.
There were special guests in Kathleen Shaw, mum of Liz, and Karen Goldrick.
“Karen is doing terrific work for Westmeath camogie, the time and effort she gives is amazing. She has a young family and a busy career, but still finds a lot of time for camogie, said John.
“She’s a breath of fresh air and has a vision for camogie, which is great.”
The chairman acknowledged all those who are participating in the current fundraiser at the club which is vital for development plans.
“We have a major fundraiser taking place, a 24 hour walkathon, which involves 12 teams from the hurling club and the same number from camogie. There is a great buzz about it and it’s a wonderful community effort,” he said.
The 24 teams will compete to raise the most funds, with fundraising running from February 14 to April 3. The top fundraising team gets first pick of their preferred walking time slot.
The walkathon will run continuously for 24 hours, with teams taking turns on the track. The event will conclude with a fun-filled community social evening to celebrate everyone’s efforts.
The development work will include a new astro turf, all-weather facility which will benefit the club greatly.
