TV week: Bergerac – a re-imagining of the epic series that starred John Nettles

Bergerac (U&Drama, Thursday 6th, 9pm)

A re-imagining of the epic series that starred John Nettles as the Jersey based detective which ran for nine series between 1981 and 1991. This time around, Irish actor Damien Molony, who starred in Ripper Street, takes on the lead role in a plot where one of the island’s wealthiest residents is murdered.

Home Grown (RTÉ 1, Wednesday 5th, 8pm)

Industry advocates and presenters Kitty Scully and Colm O’Driscoll once again travel the country in this popular series, searching for stories that highlight the very best in the Irish horticulture industry, exploring everything from innovative growing techniques to the extraordinary people shaping Ireland’s green spaces, profiling small producers, and highlighting the generosity of community gardening for a good cause.

Get Millie Black (CH4, Wednesday 5th, 9pm)

Gripping crime noir thriller with Tamara Lawrance as ex-Scotland Yard detective Millie Black, who was forced out her London job and returns to Jamaica, where a missing persons case threatens to blow her world apart when the investigation crosses paths with another Scotland Yard detective.

Ag Triall ar an Tobar (TG4, Thursday 6th, 8pm)

There are many miracles mentioned in Ireland's history that drew the public attention – so it is no surprise that many of those miracles are associated with many of our wells. Manchán Magan takes a look at the  power of miracles in today's world.

The Shelter: Animal SOS (RTÉ 1, Friday 7th, 8.30pm)

This fifth series sees a new vet join the team, Alex Cavanaugh, as the team snap into action in the face of a life threatening emergency when a nine month old puppy has been hit by a car and a mercy dash by a DSPCA Inspector has brought her to the ER.

The Death Of Stalin (BBC 4, Thursday 6th, 10.40pm)

Armando Ianucci directs this comedy-drama set in the immediate aftermath of the 1953 death of tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin. A starry cast including Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale and Paddy Considine play his parasitic cronies who square off in a frantic power struggle to become the next Soviet leader.

When We Were Kings (Sky Documentaries, Friday 7th, 9pm)

On October 30, 1974, the most famous heavyweight championship boxing match of all time took place in Zaire – the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ between champion George Foreman and challenger Muhammad Ali. This award winning documentary explores the background to this bizarre event, and how two famous sportsmen became legends for very different reasons as a result.

Aisha (BBC 2, Friday 7th, 11.05pm)

Drama charting the experiences of a young Nigerian woman as she seeks international protection in Ireland. Caught in limbo as part of the immigration system, she develops a friendship with s former prisoner at one of the accommodation centres as they try to find assistance in a broken system.

Blood For Dust (Sky Cinema Premiere, from Saturday)

Kit Harington plays an illegal weapons dealer who teams up with  travelling salesman Scoot McNairy to commit cross-state drug and gun deliveries for cartel boss Josh Lucas. When a simple exchange turns into a bloodbath, the pair find themselves in a pressure cooker situation where staying alive is all that matters.

CLASSIC MOVIE

Phoenix (RTÉ 1, Friday 7th, 11.15pm)

The late great Ray Liotta plays a cop who racks up huge gambling debts, and decides to rob a loan shark in order to pay off his bookie. With the aid of fellow corrupt officers Anthony LaPaglia and Daniel Baldwin he discovers what looked simple on paper turns out to be anything but. Anjelica Huston plays the love interest.

KIDS STUFF

500 Words with The One Show (BBC 1, Thursday 6th, 7pm)

The final of the successful writing competition for children, which encourages children of all abilities to dive deep into their imagination and celebrates the best homegrown storytelling from all across the UK.

Hosted by Alex Jones and Roman Kemp, the six winning original short stories are read by celebrities including Olivia Colman and McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones.

Harold and the Purple Crayon (Sky Cinema Premiere, from Friday)

Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book's pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life – and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible.

Though she does seem to incite more penance than praise, you can’t fault the lady who married a prince for pushing herself into the public eye. Meghan Markle invites friends and famous guests to a beautiful California estate, where she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips.

Deli Boys (Disney+)

When their convenience store tycoon father suddenly dies, a pair of pampered Pakistani-American brothers lose everything and are forced to reckon with their Baba's secret life of crime as they attempt to take up his mantle in the underworld.

Full Swing (Netflix)

Returning for a new series, it delves into the background dramas of the lives of professional golfers on and off the course across a season of high-stakes competition during the PGA Tour. All the big names are there, including Rory McIlroy, demonstrating that the difference between triumph and failure is often less than half an inch.

Toxic Town (Netflix)

It has been called ‘a British Erin Brockovich’ and stars Jodie Whittaker, Aimee Lou Wood and Claudia Jessie in the true story of how a group of women who gave birth to babies with limb defects took their local council in Corby to court due to toxic waste from a defunct steelworks.

SPORTS CENTRE

Athletics Live 2025: European Indoor Championships (RTÉ 2, Thursday 6th, 6pm)

One of the year’s biggest track meets from the Omnisport Appledoorm in the Netherlands will see a number of high profile Irish sports stars, including runner Sharlene Mawdsley, challenging for gold against some of the EU’s finest athletes. Paul O’Flynn is joined by Derval O’Rourke, Rob Heffernan and Sonia O’Sullivan for live coverage.

Six Nations: Ireland v France (RTÉ 2, Saturday 8th, 1pm)

This is the big one. Ireland already have the Triple Crown in the bag, now all that stands in the way of a possible Grand Slam are the mighty French, led by the mercurial Dupont. Two of the best teams with everything to play for line out at the Aviva in what promises to be an epic afternoon.
