€2.115m investment in Westmeath greenways – Burke

A major investment of more than €2.1 million in greenway projects across Westmeath will enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and provide high-quality walking and cycling routes for local communities, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke, TD, has said.

One of the projects included in the funding is the Kilbeggan to Mullingar Greenway, which has received €650,000.

A preferred route corridor is due to be released soon, and the project is now progressing through Phase 2 of 4.

Minister Burke said the funding is a significant step forward in making Westmeath a healthier, more connected, and more sustainable place to live.

“Greenways are transformative for communities,” he said.

“They provide safe, scenic spaces for walking and cycling, which is crucial for health and wellbeing. They also boost local economies, bringing visitors to areas they might not otherwise explore, supporting small businesses, and creating jobs.

“This investment of €2.115 million will ensure key projects across Westmeath continue to progress.”

Projects include:

€650,000 for the Kilbeggan to Mullingar Greenway

€500,000 for the NCN – Galway to Athlone Cycleway

€500,000 for the NCN – Athlone Castle Cycleway and Public Realm

€275,000 for NRO Regional Greenways Support 2025

€100,000 for the NCN Athlone Bridge Cycleway (Castle to the Marina)

€60,000 for Active Travel – N52 Clonmellon

€30,000 for the NCN – Galway to Maynooth Cycleway

“The Kilbeggan to Mullingar Greenway, in particular, is an exciting new project for our area. A high-quality greenway like that will open up fantastic opportunities for communities, whether for commuting, exercise, or recreation,” Minister Burke continued.

“The benefits of greenways go far beyond transport. They encourage active lifestyles, offer families a safe place to walk and cycle, and help people connect with nature.

“As the days get longer, more and more people are getting outdoors, and these greenways will provide top-class amenities for locals and visitors alike.”

Minister Burke said the funding is further evidence of Fine Gael’s commitment to sustainable transport and rural development.

“This investment ensures that Westmeath remains at the heart of Ireland’s growing greenway network. By developing the routes, we are improving quality of life, supporting tourism, and making our communities healthier and more connected,” he concluded.
