Bloom 2024 finalist encourages entry to ‘Postcard Gardens’
A Westmeath entry made it through to the final stages of the ‘Postcard Gardens’ section of Bord Bia Bloom 2024 – and Tirlán Country Life, sponsor of the Postcard Gardens, is encouraging community groups across Westmeath and around the country to enter again this year.
Running from May 29 to June 2, Bord Bia Bloom offers visitors an opportunity to explore innovative garden designs, including the Postcard Gardens, which stand out as community-focused highlights.
Carole Hayden, health care assistant in the Cluain Lir Community nursing unit in Mullingar, a finalist from Westmeath last year said: "Our Postcard Garden, ‘Forget Me Not,’ was a sensory and interactive space designed to evoke memories and spark conversation, particularly for individuals living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other conditions.
"Created by residents, staff, and volunteers from Cluain Lir Community Nursing Unit, the garden reflects the stories and creativity of our community."
She explained that through the sights, smells, and hands-on experience of gardening, Cluain Lir aimed to connect its residents with their past and the wider community, "fostering joy, engagement, and meaningful moments".
The Postcard Gardens feature 2mx3m plots, showcasing imaginative designs created by community groups, schools, charitable organisations, and garden clubs. The small spaces provide a platform to tell stories and celebrate creativity through garden design.
Tirlán Country Life says the emphasis on community spirit and innovation aligns closely with its core values.
The 100 per cent farmer-owned firm operates garden centres in 15 communities across the midlands and south east. Each CountryLife store has its own skilled horticulturists and they are available year-round to assist members of the community with all gardening needs.
As part of this partnership, Tirlán CountryLife will give each shortlisted Postcard Garden a €200 voucher for plants from their stores, enabling participants to bring their creative visions to life.
• Applications for the Postcard Gardens are open until March 6. Community groups, schools, charitable organisations, and garden clubs are encouraged to apply.
