Seachtain na Gaeilge at Castlepollard Library
North Westmeath has a proud heritage of promoting Irish culture and language and this Thursday, March 13, there is a celebration of that rich tradition in Castlepollard Library at 3pm.
The local Irish speaking group Cúpla Focal have organised a session of music, song and poetry. There will be a talk on one of the great promoters of the native tongue, the late Peadar Mac Naeidhe (Nee) (1873-1970), who was a passionate Irish organiser and timire, or travelling teacher.
Peadar, who was a native of Coole, was a skilled stone mason. He became a staunch Conradh na Gaeilge enthusiast and taught Irish to adult groups, in Westmeath, and in Leitrim, Longford and Meath.
At a time when roads were poor, he travelled by bike to his night classes and always finished up with a few tunes on his fiddle.
Clann Lir, the local Comhaltas group, will provide music for the occasion, and there will be a cupán afterwards.
Castlepollard Library has supported the seisiún and made available the board room for the occasion.
Fáilte roimh gach duine.
