'So, a smile is always better'

Poems by Brendan Martin

Beware

Monsters may look nasty

but it’s not always the case

of judging how somebody is

by just seeing a face.

--------

It’s nice to be spoken to,

though appearances seem gruff;

and anticipating friendly answers

may not be quite enough.

--------

So, a smile is always better;

than a grimace, laugh or sneer;

be grateful and respectful,

as it could be you, they fear!

Hello Leaf

Ah! Leaves at last,

peeping through,

from beneath the clay,

playing peekaboo.

--------

I wonder what, they

might turn out to be,

weeds or flowers?

We’ll wait and see.

--------

I cannot recall

what grew before;

but the world is alive,

outside once more.

--------

So! Hello green!

Welcome leaf!

Spring pushed back

that Winter thief.

--------

Now grow up strong,

and stand up tall,

be the hope of life,

for one, for all.

Helping Hands

Guide the hands that care for me.

Keep them ever there for me,

even just for company,

or they can join in prayer with me.

--------

Help them every night and day,

as they toil at work or play;

making people feel okay,

or helping to keep pain away.

--------

Warm them if they feel the cold.

Give them strength and love to hold

other hands, which have grown old,

and held them as they were consoled.

--------

Thank you for your helping hands,

for caring for your fellow man;

from one who truly understands

your sacrifice, your love, your plans.

Maybe

‘What’s the quickest way to Heaven?’,

asked the crow as she flew.

I shook my head, not knowing,

and the crow shook her head too.

--------

‘I guess I’ll just keep flying;

I might get to yonder hill,

so I may as well keep trying’;

and I agreed ‘you will’.

--------

‘Will I ever get to Heaven?’,

she shouted, as she passed.

‘Yes, where ever it may be,

but don’t you go so fast.’

--------

‘Well then, I’ll have a tea break’,

she said, landing on a tree;

‘and if I can’t find Heaven,

maybe Heaven will find me.
