Lough Lene event this Sunday to mark World Water Day
AlphaDive Subaqua Club are performing a special dive at Lough Lene on Sunday morning next, March 23, to mark World Water Day.
This year, the theme for the day is ‘Glacier Preservation’ but the need for conservation extends to all water sources, including lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.
On Sunday members of Alphadive Sub Aqua Club, in collaboration with Bluedot and the Local Authority Waters Programme, invite environmental enthusiasts, divers, and nature lovers to Lough Lene (Sunday, 9.45-11.30am).
They will discuss how litter affects the aquatic environments, who microplastics break down and add to other environment pressures for wildlife.
LAWPRO (the Local Authority Waters Programme) will support the event with details on the theme of how precious and delicate our freshwater ecosystems can be, especially high-status waters, with local and global examples.
Members of Collinstown Action Group will do a clean-up on the Lough Lene shore and light refreshments will be offered to attendees.

World Water Day
World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, serves as a global reminder of the urgent need for sustainable water management. It is a day to reflect on how individuals and communities can contribute to protecting water resources against pollution, overuse, and climate change.
Lough Lene, a renowned high-status water body, is a prime example of how conservation efforts can maintain the purity and beauty of a natural resource. The collaborative efforts of environmental groups and local communities ensure that this treasure is preserved for future generations.
Tyrrellspass
Another LAWPRO event with local interest is ‘Sustainable Urban Drainage - Stormwater Solutions for Tyrrellspass'.
Tyrrellspass Tidy Towns hosts this online workshop, which will examine how stormwater runoff from streets and yards affects waterways.
It will explore nature based solutions for natural flood control, drought resilience and water filtration. Sustainable Urban Drainage systems (SUDs) come in many sizes and fit different needs: the workshop will discuss what could be installed in a village such as Tyrrellspass.
Féidhlim Harty is an environmental consultant specialising in waterway rewilding, habitat creation projects and waterway protection and enhancement using nature based solutions. His company FH Wetland Systems has been designing ecological solutions for environmental change since the mid 1990s. www.wetlandsystems.ie
This workshop is funded by the Local Authority Waters Programme.
It is an online event (rescheduled from World Water Day) on the evening of Wednesday April 2 and supported by the LAWPROs Community Water Development Fund.
