Dean Kelly, in action against Meath's Glen Callaghan, lined out at full forward for Westmeath in the first round.

Minor footballers meet Longford

Following a first round defeat by Meath, the Westmeath minor footballers will be aiming to bounce back when they take on Longford in the Leinster Minor Football Championship in Kinnegad this evening, 7.30pm.

It was a definite setback for the Lake County, who were aiming to be a lot closer and certainly manager David Geoghegan and his backroom team will be hoping for a much-improved performance. In truth, the result against Meath is an unfair reflection on Westmeath’s contribution to the game as they were very competitive in general play, but two late goals by the Royals compounded a number of errors on the Lake County’s part.

Longford staged a strong fightback to earn a draw with Kildare in their first round clash at Pearse Park and the visitors will be determined to build on that display. Westmeath's final game of the group is away to Kildare on Thursday, April 17.

The Westmeath team that played Meath was: John Paul; Tomás Brennan, Eoin Donohue, Seán Byrne; Conor Casey, Oisín McCauley, Sean Keegan; Cian Fleming, Dillon Burke; Aaron Connaire, Will Scahill, Finn Higgins; Jack Duignan, Dean Kelly, Sean Whittaker. Subs used: Conor Cleary for Connaire (inj., 39), Rory McCaul for Fleming (43), Ross Tully for McCauley (blood, 49-51), Ross Tully for Casey (56), Sean Graham for Kelly (60), William Geraghty for Duignan (60).
