The National Children’s Choir is a school based choral experience that takes place around the country every other year. Children learn songs from classical to modern music, by reading print music and singing in parts.
Local schools then join together and perform a concert in their community.
St Etchen’s NS of Kinnegad and St Kenny NS staged a concert with full orchestra in St Paul’s Church, Mullingar, last Thursday, April 3, under the direction of Joanna Fagan, who is a teacher, and a renowned musician.
Since 1985 some 180,000 children have enjoyed the experience of singing with the National Children’s Choir at a local level. This year marks the 40th (ruby) anniversary, and that is thanks to the musical directors Anne Purcell, Máiréad Déiseach and Órla Gillen.
This year 8,000 children will perform in 22 concerts around the country for thousands of audience members.
The students and teachers have been working hard learning this music since last September.
