U16 camogie side denied by Armagh

Westmeath Camogie Roundup

Westmeath's U16 camogie side headed north to Armagh in the final group game of the EIR U16 All-Ireland series on Sunday. Kevin Williams’ side were looking to find a win against a strong Orchard County. They went in with one win and one loss. In a tough opening half there was nothing to separate the sides and 0-4 each showed it might be a game of fine margins.

Armagh, however, came out stronger in the second thirty and as the clock ticked down, the orange jerseys found themselves nine points clear. However, Westmeath fought back and had the chance to grab a draw with two minutes remaining but unfortunately the penalty did not hit the net and Armagh took the win, 2-8 to 2-5.

SENIOR LEAGUE ROUND 1

Clonkill got the Senior League 2025 going with a fine win over Lough Lene Gaels in Collinstown on Friday evening last. Under the lovely clear skies, it was Megan Dowdall who led the way again. Full match report available on page ____. Elsewhere on the same night, Raharney and Drumraney locked horns again having faced off in the decider last year. Again, it was the blues who came out on top against a very impressive Drumraney, 1-10 to 1-9.

St Munnas, back in Division 1 for 2025, began life again in the top tier with a win over a Castletown-Geoghegan side who are really progressing well.

Even in the 4-2 to 2-5 defeat, Castletown had fine performances from Shannon Dalton, Karen Keegan, and Caoilinn Elliffe while Adele Geoghegan, Grace Gallagher, Eleanor Murphy, and Joanne Keenan found the target along with Dalton and Keegan.

The remaining Division 1 games saw Crookedwood highlight their early credentials with a 2-17 to 1-6 win over Castlepollard.

In Division 2, the 2024 beaten finalists, St Brigid’s met Cullion in their opener and came away with victory. Debutants Katie Deegan and Olive Carroll, along with regulars Mary Deegan, Ava Balfe, and Amy Cully, led the way for the victors. Eva Cawley and Emma Broughan were to the fore for the maroon. Brownstown also won well against Athlone side, Southern Gaels.

Louise Horgan’s 2-3 topped the charts while Alannah Guirke (1-4) and Leah O’Brien (1-2) chipped in with fine displays. Chloe Henry and Saoirse Reddington also pointed. Finally, Delvin took on Mullingar side, St Oliver Plunkett’s. Delvin had Carla Gaffney flying on her senior debut while Niamh Horan also stood out. Plunkett’s, despite the scoreline, gave it their all and being a team in development with mostly underage players, they deserve great credit for their efforts.
