Mullingar girls on for the double
Mullingar Rugby Club notes
On Saturday, April 5, Mullingar RFC’s U18 girls travelled to SETU Carlow to compete in the Leinster League Final - many for the last time in their youth careers. Having faced Athy earlier this season, the girls knew a final would demand their very best.
With a strong crossfield wind and biting cold, conditions were far from ideal. Still, Mullingar struck first after sustained pressure, with Orlagh O’Brien finishing a hard-fought team move. Maebh O’Hara added the extras to go 7-0 up. Ten minutes later, slick passing created space for Orla Rijksen to add another try, making it 12-0. Athy replied just before halftime, narrowing the lead to 12-5.
The second half was tense and physical, as both sides battled for every inch. Despite Mullingar’s pressure, it was Athy who scored next in the final minute. Thankfully, the difficult conversion drifted wide, sealing a 12-10 win for Mullingar.
Now, all eyes are on Donnybrook Stadium for the Leinster Cup Final on May 3, where the girls will chase the double. With 15 of the players also winning the Leinster Schools Cup with Loreto Mullingar, this team is determined to make history.
