Community Games Swimming County Finals
Westmeath Community Games had a fantastic day of swimming at the county finals in the RSC Athlone on Saturday afternoon last, April 19. The event was carried out with military precision from registration, warm-up, racing and medal presentation. A sincere thank you to Mount Temple Baylin for volunteering to coordinate this wonderful event, where we had close on 150 entrants competing.
There were many who made the day possible but a big shout out to Fergal as chief coordinator, assisted by Anne, Patricia, Paula, Deirdre, Anne Marie, Sean and many more who acted as lane referees, call area officials, collating results and all that assisted in what was a very well organised event and all ran off in a very controlled and relaxed manner. Thanks to Avril and Mags for all their help in medal presentation and photography.
We hope the children had a great day and took away most of all some good memories.
The winner in each event now qualify straight to the National Finals that will be held at the Watershed in Kilkenny. Girls on Saturday July 5 and Boys on Sunday July 6. Precise detail will be available closer to the national finals.
We are aware that some of the winners of Saturday’s events are not available for the national finals so second place will be offered their position and they will be notified as soon as possible. County swim hats will be distributed to the children that will represent us at the national finals.
Well done all.
Leinster Finals
All weekend one Leinster finals are on Saturday April 27 and predominantly in Longford. Westmeath have volunteered to host the Leinster finals of badminton and table tennis. We would like to acknowledge all the hard work that Emer Mulvaney has put into organising these events. Milltown Community centre will be buzzing on Saturday afternoon with teams from Wicklow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Dublin, and Westmeath battling it out in the hope of winning the Leinster title and progressing to the national finals.
We are well represented this year at the Leinster finals with all three of our teams reaching the finals in chess, and all four teams in Draughts. Kilpatrick and Moate have made it to the finals in Rugby X7s. Athlone East will be our representative in Basketball U13 Boys. Mullingar-Dublin Road South, Streamstown-Horseleap, Drumraney-Tang and Castledaly have all made it to the Leinster semi-finals in Indoor soccer. Gainstown-Milltownpass and Athlone-East will carry the Westmeath flag in Futsal. This is one of our best years in a long time with so many teams progressing past the Leinster Preliminary and Zone games and we wish them all the best of luck.
County Track and Field Finals in Mullingar Harriers
Our next ORS closing date will be for the county finals of track and field events plus ball throw. The closing date is Sunday May 11. Mullingar Harriers Athletics Grounds will be the location for the finals on Sunday May 18.
All our areas are now organising their outdoor field events. These events are Camogie, Hurling, Gaelic Football, Outdoor soccer and Tag Rugby. All these games must be completed by June 7.
