Corden Cup final fixture confirmed: Offaly vs Westmeath
Glenisk O'Connor Park will host the Andrew Corden Cup final between Offaly and Westmeath next Tuesday evening, April 29 (throw-in 6.30pm).
Offaly's U20 footballers defeated Carlow in their semi-final played at Faithful Fields last night (Tuesday). Edenderry's Cillian Foran and Dara Bates of Shamrocks scored the Offaly goals in a 2-15 to 0-15 victory.
Carlow had lead narrowly at half-time (0-9 to 0-8) but with the impressive Kaelem Bryan scoring nine points, Offaly did enough to secure their place in the decider.
For their part, Westmeath recorded a very comprehensive win over Laois in the other semi-final in Kinnegad. Milltown's Jack Duncan scored three goals for Westmeath as the home side ran out winners by 6-13 to 0-7.
Interestingly, Offaly and Westmeath met in the first round of the Leinster U20 championship last month, with the visitors claiming victory by 1-17 to 0-14 at Faithful Fields.
In a strong group also containing Meath and Dublin, neither of the midland outfits were able to advance to the knockout stages.
Mark Plunkett's charges restored pride with a battling performance when losing to Dublin, before defeating Meath in their last group game, albeit Offaly's hopes of progressing were over at that stage. Westmeath lost out to both Meath and Dublin, with the latter defeat at Parnell Park ending the Leinster hopes of Kenny McKinley's side.
However, now both sides are one win away from the consolation prize of the Andrew Corden Cup, a Leinster 'B' competition which commemorates the former Carlow footballer who died at the young age of 24.
Tickets for next Tuesday's final in Tullamore are €15 and must be purchased in advance, with free admission for under-16s (no ticket required).
