Brendan Shaw has stepped down as secretary of Westmeath County Committee.

Shock as Westmeath GAA Secretary steps down

There is shock in Westmeath GAA circles today following the news that County Committee Secretary Brendan Shaw has resigned his position after three years at the helm.

Mr Shaw, a member of the Raharney club, has been a strong voice for the association over the years and he served a term as Assistant Secretary (Fixtures Secretary) before taking up the top position. Only last year he addressed clubs on a potential crisis regarding indiscipline at games, encouraging club officers to take a firm hand against members who were stepping out of line.

He also strongly supported the introduction of the new football playing rules ahead of last year’s County Convention, noting how the game was struggling to attract supporters because of the heavy focus on a defensive style. Tributes have been paid to the Raharney clubman on social media.

In a statement on Friday, Westmeath GAA confirmed Mr Shaw’s resignation.

"Westmeath GAA wishes to announce that Brendan Shaw has stepped down from his role as County Secretary after three years of dedicated service. Brendan has resigned for personal reasons, and we fully respect his decision.

"We extend our sincere thanks to Brendan not only for his commitment and hard work during his time as County Secretary, but also for the three years he previously served as Assistant Secretary and Fixtures Secretary. His dedication and professionalism across all roles have been greatly appreciated.

"We wish Brendan all the very best for the future and thank him once again for his outstanding service to Westmeath GAA," the statement read.

Westmeath GAA will have to begin the process of appointing a new County Committee Secretary in the weeks ahead.
