Funding of almost €27,000 for walking trails in Westmeath

Funding of €26,500 for two walking trails in Westmeath was included in an announcement by Minister Heather Humphreys of €1 million to support 517 walking trails in the country.

The funding will be provided to local support groups to promote their trails as tourist attractions.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke, TD, said it is a major boost for communities across the county, .

The groups supporting trails in Westmeath are the National Famine Way Committee (€25,000 allocated) and the Everything Tyrrellspass Has on Show (ETHOS) committee (€1,500).

“Walkways throughout Westmeath give our communities an outlet for fresh air, exercise and the opportunity to meet our neighbours and friends,” said Minister Burke.

“In Westmeath, we are fortunate to have such committed community organisations maintaining and upgrading these trails, and I am delighted that this funding will help support them in their work.

“The funding for the National Famine Way and the Cloncrow Bog and Village Trail is a crucial investment that will provide a wider economic boost for the wider communities across Westmeath.

“I look forward to walking these trails in the coming weeks and months and seeing their continued success,” Minister Burke concluded.
