Great scoring as new member Jim Curran bags Garda prize
The ever popular Garda members' - retired and active - sponsored competition for the gents of the club attracted a fine entry on Sunday last in conditions more akin with what the weather should be like at this time of year with sunshine and April showers aplenty. With the late growth (much needed, I might add) the course is beginning to look splendid and the scoring on the day reflected the excellent conditions. After the scores were computed, the popular winner of the first prize was Jim Curran. Jim had the minimum to spare from Joe Ryan, who was more than happy with his form. Another top score returned was thirty nine points from young seven handicapper James O'Rourke and a few on thirty seven and thirty six.The presentation of prizes will take place on Sunday night next at 9pm in conjunction with the competition of the day, the Bracken family butcher men's singles.Full ResultsGarda Prize: Winner - Jim Curran (20) 40 pts.; Second - Joe Ryan (19) 39 pts.; Div. 1 - Chris Geraghty (9) 35 pts.; Div. 2 - Alan Kelly (12) 37 pts.; Div.3 - James McWalter (16) 37 pts; Best Gross - Paul Garry (5); Seniors - Pat Cleary (15) 36 pts. Juniors - James O'Rourke (7) 39 points.Gents seniors' golfThe wonderful golfing weather of the past few weeks enticed the largest number yet to compete in the seniors' outing on April 20. Joe Fallon continued his winning form, coming off the back of a second placing the previous week, by taking the super seniors prize. Our Club President, Austin Witter was the popular winner of the 12 hole competition. Following close on his heels in second place was Brian Reidy who made the most of the excellent conditions. Tommy Lyng, himself no stranger to the winning enclosure, finished in third place. A final reminder to those intending to travel to Ballykissteen Golf Resort to enter their names on the list provided on the notice board.Inter club affairsAs mentioned last week, this is the busy time on the inter club scene. Last week-end we had no less than four teams in action, with mixed fortunes. On Friday evening our Duggan Cup squad ended up on the end of a 3-2 defeat to our friends from Moate Golf Club after, what could only be described as a 'cliff hanger'.On Saturday evening our mixed team commenced their defence of the Leinster title and disposed of Navan Golf Club by the odd match of five after some very good fare. Sunday saw our Leinster fourball side succumb to our friends from New Forest in a very tight and sporting match and we look forward with more than a passing interest to your progress lads while our Provincial Towns cup squad were up against the holders Cill Dara Golf Club and narrowly failed to dethrone the champs after a very close encounter. Well done to all concerned.Club Foursomes DrawThe draw for the club foursomes for the coveted Victor Woods Memorial trophies has been made and is posted in the locker room, while the club fourball draw will take place on May 9 as will that for the Father Pat Dunne Memorial mixed foursomes matchplay.Bracken Family Butchers Singles on Sunday nextAs expected the timesheet is fast filling via the BRS for next Sunday's competition, which again is generously sponsored by Seamus Bracken family butcher, Lynn Road Mullingar and again I would appeal to those who are not going to be available for the competition, even if they don't know until Saturday evening, to please make arrangements to get their name deleted from the timesheet. Those waiting for a vacancy will only be too glad to avail of the slots.Bank Holiday Monday OpenThe committee has decided to run an open competition for both ladies and gents on the Bank Holiday Monday and entry can be done again through the BRS. It is an ideal opportunity to invite your friends from neighbouring clubs for a competitive game.Ladies Branch NotesDays' Bazaar sponsored last week's scotch foursomes' competition. Bad luck for the early starters as frost prevented the course opening before 10am. Despite this setback the competition still commanded a large turnout and a very high scoring days golf ensued. Winners, with a fantastic 42 points were, past captains Geraldine Bell and Ann Fagan, who played off a combined handicap of 16. Ann Tyrrell and Sarah Pringle were next with 40 points. Patience Collier and Fiona Burke continued their wonderful form of late by winning best gross with 29 points, whilst Lady Captain Brege McCarrick and Bernadette Solon were third. And what of the unfortunate few unable to play due to frost? They played a fun sweepstake on the back 9 with Betty Sleator taking the spoils. Well done Betty!Anyone interested in playing in the Fr. Pat Dunne competition please see notice board in main lobby for details.ResultsWednesday, April 211st - Geraldine Bell and Ann Fagan (16) 42 points; 2nd - Ann Tyrrell and Sarah Pringle (30) 40points; Best Gross - Patience Collier and Fiona Burke (11) 29 gross points; 3rd - Brege McCarrick and Bernadette Solon (21) 40 points.
