Calls for ornate carvings on Ballyglass tree stumps

Westmeath County Council are to examine a number of large tree stumps at Ballyglass cemetery to determine whether they are suitable for ornate works. An assessment into the cost of works will also be carried out.

That comes following a motion brought before Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District last Monday by Cllr Michael Dollard (NP).

“One or two people asked me about the possibility of the tree stumps being looked at,” he said. “I think if we come up with something appropriate, it’d be unique.”

In 2024, the district allocated a total of €125,000 towards Ballyglass cemetery, to include an extension for future development and to improve paths, kerbs, to accommodate users.

Cllr Andrew Duncan (FG), in support of Cllr Dollard’s motion, welcomed the funding allocation, stating that it came up regularly “during the canvass”, particularly in relation to the paths and access for cars.

“€125,000 should go a fair way to sorting out a lot of it,” he said.

There are also plans to talk with the art committee in relation to creating an artistic feature from the tree stumps, as per Cllr Dollard’s motion.
