Boxers packed a punch for charity
The organisers of a white-collar boxing event that took place at The Greville Arms Hotel on the bank holiday weekend are confident their efforts will be of significant benefit to a charity dedicated to supporting mental health within the construction sector.
Brendan ‘Baldy’ McVeigh, together with Louise Ahern and Lucy Charles organised the ‘Power and Pride’ boxing event in aid of Lighthouse, The Construction Charity.
Nineteen brave souls volunteered to enter the boxing ring on the night – the uneven number being accounted for by one female boxer agreeing to fight twice!
Among the 19 were Baldy himself and six colleagues from his workplace, Writech Ltd. In recognition of their efforts, Writech made a contribution to the Lighthouse fund.
Because the event was for Lighthouse, many of the fighters were people who work in construction, and Baldy said the charity is well-known and highly-regarded in the construction sector.
The event proved to be a fantastic night’s entertainment – and the large attendance added to the buzz and excitement on the night. “It was a great attendance, better than I could have imagined, and there was a great atmosphere.
"People were fantastic: we had an amazing night at The Greville Arms,” said a delighted Baldy, who reckons that when the sums are done, the event will have raised a substantial four-figure sum for Lighthouse.
Baldy, who was a participant as well as organiser, paid tribute to those who got the event up and running, those who took part, and those who supported the effort by buying tickets.
He said much credit was due on the organisational front to Louise Ahern, and also to photographer Lucy Charles, who did all the publicity shots and handled all the social media associated with the event.
He also extended thanks to Tony Conroy of the Elite Boxing Club, who trained all the participants in advance and who refereed the bouts on the night.
Also on the list of those who made the event a success were Lee Ryan, Matty Charles and Jesse McGovern, as well as Robin Conroy, who presented the medals; Gary Nolan, who acted as MC for the evening, and Jude McGuinness, who was the DJ.
