Impressive victory for Gary Walsh in snooker decider

The 2024 Classic/Players Snooker Championship Final, held at St Mary’s Snooker Club on Bishopsgate Street, Mullingar has reached a dramatic conclusion. The Mick Kane Champions Cup was up for grabs and the final saw defending champion and club No.1 Richie Toal take on Gary Walsh in an eagerly awaited showdown.

Frame one hinted at a dominant performance from Richie Toal, who has been in top form over the past few seasons. However, Gary Walsh, enjoying a successful season himself with multiple title wins, was ready for the challenge. Many expected Toal to claim victory, but it quickly became clear he was not his usual confident self.

Gary started strongly, playing with focus and control, avoiding risky shots, and took the first frame 70-33. Richie looked out of sorts, yet fought back in the second frame, almost claiming it, but Gary’s resilience saw him edge ahead again. The third frame was high-scoring, but Gary continued his strong play to stay on top. The final frame was the least competitive, with Richie struggling further, allowing Gary to seal a convincing 4-0 victory. Richie graciously congratulated Gary on his impressive win.

Result: Gary Walsh defeated Richie Toal 4-0. Frame scores: 70-33, 58-45, 83-50, 58-20.

The Hon. Club Secretary thanked sponsor Mick Kane, St Mary’s Snooker Club, and all the players for their support. The next event, the 2024 Westmeath Open Snooker Championship, starts this week, with Barry Mulvany set to defend his title as the final senior competition of the year.

Mick Kane presented the Mick Kane Champions Cup to the victor Gary Walsh and a voucher to runner-up Richie Toal.
