Stephen’s Night benefit at arts centre in support of local man

The team at Mullingar Arts Centre are hosting a benefit night in aid of Stephen Corroon this coming Sunday, November 17.

Stephen’s Night will be a huge night of entertainment and craic, featuring funny man Conor Moore of Conor’s Sketches, West End star, Mark Irwin, local trad group Some One’s Sons and more, to be announced.

Stephen Corroon and his children, Hazel and. Billy

Forty-one-year-old Stephen Corroon, a member of the Lakeside Wheelers, set off to participate in the Orwell Wheelers Randonneé in the Dublin Mountains on the May Bank Holiday weekend this year, unaware that it would be an event that would change his life forever.

His wife Aoibhinn received the call that Stephen had fallen from his bike and, after a medical examination, it was found that he had a cervical spine injury, which would leave him with a profound and permanent neurological deficit and without the use of his arms and legs.

Since the accident, Stephen has spent nine weeks under the care of the amazing team in the National Spinal Injuries Unit in the Mater Hospital and is now in Tullamore Regional Hospital awaiting transfer to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

He has made some progress but the future is unknown.

Stephen’s Night aims to raise funds to help Stephen, his wife Aoibhinn, and their two children, nine-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Billy, to overcome the challenges they face.

Stephen’s immediate requirements include significant home adaptations, the need for extensive equipment to ensure his safe and dignified care at home, as well as long-term input from occupational therapy and physiotherapy personnel.

Currently, Stephen is entirely dependent on others for every aspect of his daily life, including self-care, feeding and personal hygiene.

It is hoped that the funds raised will make this a little bit easier for Stephen and his family.

Proceeds from Sunday’s event will go towards his continued care and comfort.
