‘Nobody’s talking to us’ say the MEM Players

Another hilarious comedy, ‘Nobody’s Talking to Me’ will be staged by MEM Players in Milltown Community Centre over three nights next week – Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 28-30. Many popular local thespians will be treading the boards again in what promises to be another side-splitting show.

‘Nobody is Talking to Me’ is a two-act comedy by Sligo playwright and broadcaster Tommy Marren. It is set in rural Ireland in the late 1960s/early 70s. Mattie and Maggie Conway are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, but few people know that the ‘happy couple’ have not spoken to each other for a decade.

When the parish priest arrives to surprise them and to renew their wedding vows, all hell breaks loose!

The action is frantic, and, bit-by-bit, we find out why communications between Mattie and Maggie have broken down.

Mattie’s eccentric sister Minnie, who has lived in the house all her life, is feeling the pressure, and with the Conways’ only daughter Josephine courting Andy Walsh – best described as “a sandwich short of a picnic” – the plot thickens by the minute.

The fact that Bartley O’Dowd’s wake is taking place next door doesn’t help matters either. Add to the mix a complicated crossword, an overused handkerchief, the appearance of an old flame, and a surprise party where none of the guests talk to one another, and you’re in for a bellyful of laughs.

“It’s just one laugh after another,” a member of the crew confirmed.

MEM Players are based in Milltown, where there is a long history of amateur dramatics, and they cater for the wider community too.

Following a five-year hiatus which included Covid, the group came back “with a bang” last year with a hugely successful three-night run of the hilarious play, ‘Move over Mrs Markam’. It featured players from the locality and surrounding areas as well as some from Mullingar and further afield.

This year’s cast includes Cathy Dillon as Maggie Conway and Brendan (Tosh) Kiernan as Mattie, Aidan O’Rourke as Andy Walsh and Antoinette Connell as Kathleen O’Dowd. Bernie McHugh plays Minnie Conway, Joe O’Hehir plays Fr O’Toole, Claire Ross plays Josephine Conway, and Liam Glynn plays Luke O’Neill.

The show starts at 8pm each night at Milltown Community Centre, Eircode N91 VA06.
