The Downs set dancers on stage in Tullamore on Saturday.

Clean sweep in Leinster Scór na nÓg semi-final

Westmeath Scór followers made the short journey to Tullamore on Saturday for the Leinster semi-final of Scór na nÓg. Seven acts fresh from county final success last weekend took to the stage with the hope of claiming a place in the provincial final.

It was a great weekend for Westmeath GAA on the pitch, as the senior hurling and football champions progressed to the semi-finals, and it was equally successful in Scór, where the county had a clean sweep and all the county champions progressed to the Leinster final.

First on stage for Westmeath on Saturday was St Mary’s Rochfortbridge in the figure dancing. They flawlessly danced the ‘three tunes’ and built on their success in the county final to dance their way into the provincial final.

In the individual competitions, Westmeath was represented by Darragh McCabe in the solo singing and Alanna Corroon in the recitation/storytelling. Both gave excellent accounts of themselves in their categories and overcame stiff competition to ensure places in the Leinster final in two weeks’ time.

Moate All Whites were next in the ballad group discipline, where they produced a flawless performance of their two songs ‘Ireland’ and ‘Nature’s Little Symphony’. They continued their long-standing tradition in the discipline by claiming a place in the final four in Leinster for another year.

In the novelty act competition, The Downs GAA club represent performed a well executed display of their act entitled ‘The High Five Code’. The young group had the audience in stitches and got the nod from the adjudicator to progress.

The Bunbrosna musical trio, Anna Dunleavy, Aoife Dunleavy and Béibhínn Nic Gabhann, competed in a top class instrumental music competition. The three girls hit the right note for the judges when they played a lively jig and reel. They too will join the rest of the Westmeath participants in the Leinster final.

Closing out the evening were the black and amber clad set dancers from The Downs. The group danced figures one and six of the ‘Plain Set’. When the results were announced at the end of the evening, the group were in the top two and will progress to the Leinster final. They will go in hunt of back-to-back titles following their win last year in Wexford.

On Saturday November 30, the qualifiers go to Summerhill, County Meath for the Leinster final which starts at 1pm. The Tráth na gCeist will be held prior to the stage competitions at 11.30am.
