Tanzanian Heavenly Homes 2025 calendar now on sale

The Tanzanian Heavenly Homes 2025 calendar, filled with stunning nature images taken from around the country by local photographer John McCauley, is now on sale.

It is available at the Westmeath Examiner Office and in Spar, Dominick Street, and all proceeds go towards the charity’s work in Tanzania.

“The photographs are all nature photographs I’ve taken in different parts around the country. There are a few from outside of Westmeath, Wicklow and so on,” said John of this year’s calendar.

“And if anybody wants a print of any of those photos, by all means, make contact with me on 087 615 7349 and I can arrange a print for you. All profits from that print will go to our work in Africa.

“And, on the back of our calendar this year, are photographs of the people who were with me (in Africa) last year,” he said, adding that there are some recognisable personalities in the photographs.

Tanzanian Heavenly Homes was founded in Mullingar by John McCauley, Gerry and Mary Gillen, and Anne Farrell in 2013. The project stemmed from a holiday in Africa initially for the group to concentrate on leisure, including nature photography, rather than charity work. The shocking conditions they witnessed at the orphanage completely altered their holiday plans.

Thanks to the generous people of Ireland, the orphanage and its surroundings were transformed. It is now self-sufficient and thriving and the team have turned their attention to the old and destitute in Tanzania who live deprived and undignified lives. Mostly, they live in mud huts with no water, no electricity or basic amenities.

Tanzanian Heavenly Homes have already completed 15 double-unit homes. Each unit houses five people. A double unit consists of a one-bedroom room with a toilet and hand basin, and a place to cook outside. Each house costs €40,000, which includes labour, materials, and solar panels.

So far, 25 people have signed up to travel to Africa in June of next year, John said, adding that he will have to put a cap of 30 to keep the group at a manageable size.

“I like to bring about 10 or 12, but I’ve got such a demand from people. And they’re all good, good, good people. I can’t say no to them,” he said.

The calendar is available for purchase at Spar, Dominick Street, and the Westmeath Examiner office, and at Harbour Place Shopping Centre in Christmas week.

“We’ll spend three and a half days there. Please call over. We will be showing all our photographs and it’s just to show you where your money goes,” said John. “Call for a chat, bring the children and see the photographs. And we’ll be delighted to see you.”

If you would like to donate to Tanzanian Heavenly Homes, you can give just €3 a month.
