The proposed Active Travel network for Mullingar.

Public has until Friday to provide feedback on Dublin Road Active Travel Scheme

Members of the public have until this Friday, January 17, to provide feedback on the Dublin Road Active Travel Scheme, which is at the preliminary design phase.

Westmeath County Council issued a press release this week, outlining the main features of Dublin Road project, which includes a new 2.5km two-way cycle track from the Dublin Bridge to the Mullingar Park Hotel , as well the upgrade of existing footpaths; new pedestrian crossings at the Delvin Road, Ardmore Road and Glenmore Road juncions; the installation of new stops and upgrades of existing stops for the new town bus service; and the introduction of traffic calming measures to slow vehicles down.

The Dublin Road project is part of a wider 9km Active Travel network planned for the town of Mullingar.

Westmeath County Council, funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority’s Active Travel Investment Programme, has identified key routes in Mullingar along which to provide enhanced Active Travel facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

These key routes are the initial routes of a planned larger network of routes planned for Mullingar. These enhanced facilities will generally be provided within the existing road footprint and will allow school-goers, commuters and visitors to travel safely and sustainably to work, school, leisure and retail destinations in each town.

Westmeath County Council appointed AtkinsRéalis as design consultant for these projects. One of the projects in Mullingar, namely the Dublin Road (including sections of Ardmore Road and Delvin Road) has now completed its initial preliminary design process. The initial preliminary design is available for public information and feedback from 13.01.2025 – 17.01.2025. All feedback received will be considered and will help inform the final preliminary design which will then be subject to planning approval.

The Dublin Road project will provide improved footpath and cycle tracks along the Dublin Road from the Marlinstown Roundabout to the Dublin Bridge over the Royal Canal. Spurs from the Dublin Road, along Delvin Road and Ardmore Road, will connect the route to the existing footpath and cycleway infrastructure. The Dublin Road route is approximately 2.5km in length. The key routes in Mullingar which are currently at various stages of the design process will provide approximately 9 km of a network in addition to the existing routes along Ardmore Road and the Dublin – Galway Greenway along the Royal Canal.

The other key routes in Mullingar which are currently at various stages of the design process are:

Harbour Street and Old Longford Road – from St Finian’s Secondary School to the junction of Harbour Street, Castle Street, Bishopsgate Street and Friar’s Mill Road (approximately 1.6km).

Mullingar Western Relief Road (R394) ‘C-link’ – from Lough Sheever Corporate Park to Grange South roundabout with spur to connect the route along the Ballymahon Road to the access to the Dublin-Galway Greenway along the Royal Canal (approximately 3.5km).

Mount Street, Jail Hill, Lynn Road, Sunday’s Well Road, Auburn Road and Millmount Road (1.5km)
