The Downs successful in Westmeath final

This school year celebrates the launch of the first ever Cumann na mBunscol primary schools sports quiz sponsored by Allianz. All 32 counties will host their own quiz with the winning schools qualifying for the All-Ireland Cumann na mBunscol quiz final which will be held in The Tullamore Court Hotel, Tullamore on Sunday March 23.

Last Wednesday 16 schools from across the county competed against each other for the privilege of representing Westmeath in the final. Quizmaster, Willie Geraghty, posed the questions, which everybody present agreed were pitched at a very appropriate level for the contestants. In total there were 80 questions, 40 GAA related ones, 10 picture questions and 30 general sports questions. On the day, The Downs NS emerged victorious from neighbouring schools Rathwire and Dalystown. The Downs NS recorded a very impressive 73 correct answers from the 80 questions. The winning team was made up of Isabelle Smyth, Ben Conroy, Fionn Donoghue and Seamus O’Brien.

Cumann na mBunscol na hIarmhí would like to express our gratitude to The Downs GAA club for allowing us to host this event in their clubhouse. We would especially like to thank club stalwart, Carmel McGuire, who helped out on the morning with refreshments for all the teachers present. We would also like to recognise the Trojan work put in by Ethan O’Brien, a sixth class pupil in The Downs NS who arranged all the tables and chairs for the quiz to take place.

Finally, the successful team, The Downs NS, are wished the very best in the final.
