Local firms build case for careers in construction

Bennett Construction and Shay Murtagh have joined forces with the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) to launch the pilot programme of Constructing Careers: School Edition.

It aims to inspire secondary school students to consider careers in the construction sector, offering a comprehensive insight into the diverse roles and opportunities available.

The launch week coincided with Valentine’s Day, and the campaign embraces the theme of passion and love for construction. The pilot programme features speakers from various disciplines in construction, including civil engineering, quantity surveying, health and safety, and project management.

As part of the programme, students will engage in hands-on tasks and research, exploring the tools, technologies, and skills used in construction. They will attend a presentation from the companies on career paths, industry demands, and the prospects available.

Gillian Murtagh, Shared Services director at Shay Murtagh, said: “We want to break the stereotypes of construction being just ‘hard hats and bricks’ and show students the innovation, creativity, and variety that a career in construction offers. By engaging with schools early, we hope to inspire young people to see construction as an exciting and dynamic choice.”

Helena Kiernan, HR director at Bennett Construction, echoed those sentiments: “This pilot programme is laying the foundation for the future of the industry.

“Construction is crucial in shaping the world, and we need to ensure that the next generation recognises the opportunities awaiting them in this field. We’re proud to work alongside CIF to bring this vision to life.”
