Deputy Sorca Clarke.

Clarke appointed SF spokesperson on mental health

Sorca Clarke has been appointed Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on mental health.

Speaking after her appointment was announced, Deputy Clarke said that she is "incredibly honoured and excited".

“It is an area that I am deeply passionate about, and I am committed to advocating for positive and meaningful change.

“Mental health is something that affects each and every one of us, whether directly or indirectly.

“Mental health services across the country are completely underfunded and under resourced.

“It is disheartening and unfair to see that services only seem to be accessible to those who are at their most vulnerable state. This reactive approach, rather than preventative care, is not good enough. We are losing loved ones every day as a result of this failed system.

“Everyone deserves timely access to mental health services, regardless of the severity of their condition, and regardless of what part of the country they live in.

“We must ensure that supports are in place, that they are well resourced, and are accessible to all.

“We must ensure that people receive the support they need before they reach a crisis point. Anything less is simply not good enough.

“Ireland can be a place where people get the care they need, when and where they need. Ireland can be a place where if you have a mental health crisis, that you receive appropriate care in a timely manner and that you do not have to resort to going to A&E for help."

“My role as spokesperson is not solely about raising awareness and holding the government to account, it is about driving tangible action and real change.

“I look forward to working with passionate individuals, organisations and communities going forward."
