Pupils display scientific creativity in STEM projects
Pupils at Presentation Senior School, Mullingar displayed the creations they had been working on for a STEM project for fellow pupils, staff, family and friends last Thursday.
Pupils brought in materials from home for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge. They first brainstormed together and made plans, which were signed off by their teachers.
The third classes were tasked with designing a pair of functional sunglasses and the fourth classes worked on designing a shoe that one of their group could wear for a walk around the building.
Having covered electricity, all of the fifth class pupils designed a light that could be carried around freely.
In line with the Green-Schools work and recycling ethos, the sixth classes invented a device that could remove at least three pieces of plastic from water, and they grappled with the extra challenge of making their designs waterproof.
The pupils worked in small groups to build and test their creations. They worked from their plans and developed elements along the way if necessary. They were encouraged to be as creative as possible.
Finally, all classes displayed and presented their designs in the hall for all the pupils, parents and visitors. It was a very enjoyable experience for all.
