Heartbreak for Westmeath
Meath 3-14, Westmeath 1-17
A Meath goal in the final seconds proved decisive as Westmeath’s best efforts came up short at TEG Cusack Park on Sunday.
The defeat has kept Dermot McCabe’s charges rooted to the foot of the Division 2 table and they will face two massive games against Roscommon and Down as the battle to avoid relegation continues. Kieran Martin’s goal gave the Lake County every chance, but ultimately they came away with nothing and 12 wides proved very costly on the day.
With two games to come against Down on Saturday, March 15 in Páirc Esler, Newry, at 6pm, and Roscommon on Sunday March 23, in TEG Cusack Park at 1.30pm, can Westmeath somehow survive in Division 2?
It is still mathematically possible: Louth play Cork in their next game with the winner of that game likely to survive. Down will face Monaghan in their final game.
