Group behind Molesworth festival wants walking routes opened in Rochfortbridge

The Rahanine Trailblazers were formed during the Covid pandemic, as various people out on walks in the area began sharing routes with each other

While organising the festival, the Rahanine Trailblazers initially hoped it would help gain recognition from Bord na Móna to officially establish a walking route on Bord na Mona lands around the area. In a bid to help their cause, the Trailblazers decided to put together a festival that would showcase some of the heritage their area has to offer – and thus came about the Mary Molesworth Portrait Festival that has already succeeded in raising awareness of the cultural and historical wealth of Rochfortbridge.

Mary Fallon hopes that eventually, Bord na Móna might give permission for a formal route through Rahanine Bog: “The road behind the playground leads down into the bog and when you go down far enough, you actually end up at the back of Derrygreenagh Workshop, and at the back of Derrygreenagh Workshop are the most magnificent lakes, full of swans.

“And that’s what I want for Rochfortbridge: I want those walks made available for Rochfortbridge.”
