'Dominick Street roundabout causing driver confusion'
A claim that some motorists are driving straight through the roundabout at Dominick Street without realising it is actually a roundabout, was made by Cllr Bill Collentine at the March meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.
Stating that he had witnessed the problem at first hand, Cllr Collentine proposed that the district consider installing "roundabout" signs in Mullingar town at locations such as the Dominick Street roundabout, that are light-controlled.
"I was crossing the roundabout when a van with a Dublin registration came straight through. He saw the green light and he thought he had a straight run through – which is understandable because it’s the main road," said Cllr Collentine, stating that there are no signs there informing motorists that it is a roundabout.
"Does there have to be signs or are we within the regulations?" he asked.
The official response from the district executive stated that all junctions within the district have the signs they are required to have as laid out in the Traffic Signs Manual.
District engineer, Pat Kavanagh, said a complete road safety audit had been carried out on that particular junction.
"We will certainly have a look at it to see if there’s any sign missing or any damage," he said.
