Mullingar based boxer, John Joe Nevin, has been heralded as Ireland's outstanding male amateur boxer for 2009. At a glittering presentation ceremony, John Joe, along with Katie Taylor, picked up the premier awards at the annual IABA awards.World bronze medallist, John Joe, who boxes for Cavan BC, picked up the most coveted award of the evening, the Anne Abette International Achievement Award to mark his wonderful performance in Milan.Twelve months earlier, John Joe, along with fellow Mullingar boxer, Johnny Joyce formed part of the five man Irish team in the Olympics and was unfortunate on that occasion not to have progressed further.There was further good news for Westmeath boxers at the awards ceremony when sixteen year old Moate senstation, Joe Ward, who took gold for Ireland in the AIBA World Youth Championships in Armenia picked up a youth award while David Oliver Joyce who, along with John Joe Nevin, was part of the nine man Irish team which competed at the EU Championships in Denmark and earned the title of team of the tournament, which was also honoured on Friday.
