Driver clocked at 125kmh in 50kmh zone near Castlepollard
Easter Bank Holiday Weekend Roads Policing Operation 17- 22 April
A driver was clocked doing 125kmh in a 50kmh zone near Castlepollard over the Easter weekend.
That driver was one of many caught speeding during a Garda Roads Policing Operation between 7am on Thursday 17 April and 7am today, Tuesday 22 April.
There were three fatalities on the roads during that period and 11 serious collisions resulted in 12 people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
Over the bank holiday period, An Garda Síochána carried out some 912 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints; 4,500 breath tests and 213 oral fluid tests led to 149 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Throughout the weekend, 2800 drivers were detected for speeding offences.
Notable top speeds detected in each speed zone include:
• 179kmh in a 60kmh zone on R194 Granard, Co. Longford
• 165kmh in a 100kmh on N18 Ballinacurra (Weston), Co. Limerick
• 139kmh in a 80kmh zone on R157 Dunboyne, Co. Meath
• 125kmh in a 50kmh on R394 Milltown Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath
• 110kmh in a 50kmh on the Naas Road Dublin 12, Co. Dublin
Fixed Charge Offences for other road offences during this period included:
• Using Mobile Phones – 225
• Unaccompanied learner drivers – over 160
• No seatbelts – 73
In addition:
• 109 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied
• 438 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance
An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road.
