No plans for a new Carey Bridge
The provision of a vehicular bridge connecting College Street and Fair Green is not on the cards, Cllr Aoife Davitt learned at the November meeting of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District (MKMD).
Cllr Davitt formally asked that the MKMD give an update on its plan for opening Carey Bridge to motorists in the future.
“The Carey Bridge was designed as a pedestrian bridge. There is no current requirement to make it vehicular,” the response to Cllr Davitt stated. The Fianna Fáil woman urged the council to consider the measure, arguing that it would help free up traffic movement in the area.
Glenmore Wood
A request that a filter light be installed at the traffic lights into Glenmore Wood, approaching from the Dublin side, was made by Cllr Davitt at the same meeting.
The MKMD executive stated that this suggestion had been examined and discussed with the council transportation section.
“It is considered that the junction layout is unsuitable for a filter light on the left turn into Glenmore Wood,” Cllr Davitt was informed.
Yellow box
To her request that a yellow box be installed at the junction of Mount Street and Martin’s Lane, Cllr Davitt received the response that there is no yellow box planned for that location.
Speed ramp
A call to have a speed ramp provided at St Brigid’s Well, Cullionmore as a traffic calming measure was also made by Cllr Davitt
“There are no plans for a speed ramp on this rural road,” was the formal written response to Cllr Davitt’s motion.
The Fianna Fáil woman reiterated her view that there was a need for a traffic calming measure, stating that the location was “quite dangerous”.
Going on to remark that there has been fantastic work done in the area around what was known as ‘The Supply’, Cllr Davitt explained that as part of the work, a hump on the road had been removed with the result that vehicles are no speeding in the area.
“Can this be re-examined?” she asked.
“We genuinely believe there is no need for this,” responded Martin Murray, director of services, before going on to say that the council does not put ramps on rural roads outside of speed limit zones.
Muiriosa
At the same meeting, Cllr Davitt asked that the MKMD provide a parking space outside Teach Uí Riain (The Muiriosa Foundation) in College Street, Mullingar.
“Currently, there is on-street car parking at this location. In addition, this building has private car parking spaces to the rear of the building,” the reply stated.
