Westmeath Examiner Sports Stars of the Year Awards Ceremony

One of the highlights of the Westmeath sporting calendar, the Mullingar Park Hotel/Westmeath Examiner Sports Stars of the Year Awards ceremony - which sees twelve monthly award winners honoured for their contribution to local sports over the past year - will take place in the Mullingar Park Hotel, on Friday, February 5.

Now in its third year, the event has brought togehter the cream of Westmeath sports men and women and, once again, promises to be a glittering affair as the county's sporting public comes together to honour some of Westmeath's most talented sporting achievers. A limited number of tickets for the event are available from the Westmeath Examiner offices, Blackhall Place, Mullingar, or by contacting 044 93 46701 or 0868537983, and are priced at €45. As part of a special offer, those purchasing five or ten tickets, will receive one or two tickets free respectively.

The monthly award winners of the Westmeath Examiner Sports Stars of the Year awards will be formally presented with their monthly awards on the night, and are also in contention for two prestigious awards at the gala night, the Readers' Choice Award and the overall Westmeath Examiner Sports Star of the Year Award. There is also a category for Young Sports Star of the Year. The annual Westmeath Examiner Hall of Fame Award will also honour a local sports person who has contributed much to the region's sports scene over the years. Previous winners were former Westmeath GAA star and top administrator, Paddy Flanagan and long serving GUI official, Albert Lee.

Last year's overall Westmeath Examiner Sports Star of the Year Award went to Westmeath hurler, Brendan Murtagh who had an outstanding year on the hurling field, representing his club, Clonkill, his county, his province and his country with distinction. The Young Sports Star of the Year award went to a young horsewoman, Ruth Robinson who was part of the Irish team which competed in the European Junior Championships.

Popular RTE sports personality and Moate native Colm Murray has been confirmed as the MC for next month's awards ceremony and will put his own special stamp on the occasion.
