Successful return of T&F Championships
Mullingar Harriers Athletic Club News -- The Westmeath Track and Field Championships made a welcome return to the athletics fixture list on Sunday, May 9 in Athlone IT after many years absence. As it was the first time in many years, it was decided to run a limited programme of events to test the water and over 140 people enjoyed the relaxed friendly atmosphere at the state of the art facilities in Athlone IT.For some it was certainly an eye-opener to see the Olympic-standard all-weather track at Athlone IT for the first time, a jewel in the county that many didn't know existed. There were some thrilling races and close finishes, but highlights include Shane Fitzsimons' victory in the 800m u/16 in a new personal best time of 1:57.7, which is phenomenal running for a 15 year old, and the battle between Paddy Kelly and Stephen Nea in the Senior men 5,000m that came down to the wire with Paddy winning but full credit to Stephen for giving it every effort. Good to see North Westmeath AC represented in several events.Sincere thanks to College President, Ciaran O'Catháin for allowing the use of the facilities and to Gordon Brett, Sports and Recreation Manager for his terrific help on the day. We also had great help from many parents with registration, starting, judging, recording results, medal awards, and all the other jobs that need doing, so many thanks to them, for without their help it would have been impossible to hold the competition.ResultsGirls Under 9 - 60m: 1.
