Refurbishment of Castlepollard building promised
The refurbishment of the Market House in Castlepollard is a project set to be undertaken by the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District (MKMD).
In the longer term, the intention is to develop the building as a cultural and tourism hub, members of the MKMD learnt at their July meeting, held on Monday of last week in Mullingar.
The subject arose for discussion on foot of a motion proposed by Cllr Paddy Hill calling on the MKMD to carry out some urgent repairs to the Town Hall in Castlepollard such as replacing windows.
Cllr Hill said the building, which is council-owned, has become very unsightly.
The formal written reply to Cllr Hill’s motion stated that Westmeath County Council was recently successful under the Rural Regeneration Scheme, and that one of the objectives of the application is the refurbishment of existing Market House, to facilitate and provide accommodation for community groups and organisations at a central and accessible location.
The long-term objective is to develop the building as a cultural and tourism hub, aligning with the objective to develop Castlepollard as a tourism hub for north Westmeath.
“In the interim, if minimal repairs are necessary, they will be advanced,” Cllr Hill was assured.
Cllr Hill declared himself pleased with the reply, and also the undertaking that Castlepollard is to be designated a tourism hub for north Westmeath.
“But in the meantime the hall is in bad repair with windows hanging out,” he said.
