Special 1916 supplement in this week's Westmeath Examiner
As the actual centenary of the 1916 Rising approaches, this week's Westmeath Examiner will include a special 32-page supplement on the rebellion in the county. It is a contribution of both the Westmeath Examiner and the Westmeath Independent to the 1916 Commemorations, supported by Westmeath County Council and Ireland 1916.
Market Square, Mullingar – seen here at the turn of the century – was occupied by the military in the aftermath of the 1916 rising.
The publication looks back at all sides of the conflict 100 years ago, examining not only the rebel, but those opposed to him (or her) and those caught in between. It looks at the Mullingar connections to the children who died in the 1916 Rising – forgotten victims of conflict brilliantly highlighted in a new book by broadcaster Joe Duffy.
The following are just some of the pieces you will be excited to see as part of the supplement:
- Mullingar during Easter Week
- Revoluntionary women: The Gibbons/Elliott Sisters
- Westmeath GAA in 1916
The publication will also include a list of the remaining 1916 commemorative events in Westmeath. The supplement will be in this Tuesday’s Westmeath Examiner, dated Saturday 23rd April.
