Ballinahown top of the Tidy Towns list in Westmeath
Ballinahown has come tops of the table in Westmeath in this year's SuperValu Tidy Towns competition, with 322 points – enough to place it on the list of towns to win a silver medal and a €700 prize, along with the county prize of €1,000.
Athlone, while fourth in the Westmeath table, was named as winner of a bronze medal with €400.
Just ten points separated Westmeath's tidiest town from the overall national award winner, the Tipperary village of Birdhill which got 332 points.
When it came to Westmeath's largest towns, Mullingar performed considerably less well than Athlone, obtaining 282, compared to Athlone's 300.
Killucan-Rathwire, which improved its performance by 4 per cent this year, received a €500 Endeavour Award.
Overall, within Westmeath, after the Ballinahown performance, second place went to Tyrrellspass (311), which received €800, followed by Glasson (304), which was recipient of a €500 award; then Athlone (300).
The other Westmeath entrants performed as follows: Castlepollard 297; Raharney, 294; Ballynacargy 292 and Rosemount 291.
Some 290 points apiece went to Multyfarnham and Streamstown; Collinstown obtained 289; Ballinagore 288; Tubberclair 285; Moate and Mullingar each received 282; Tang scored 281,while Milltownpass and Rochfortbridge obtained 280 apiece.
Rathowen was awarded 279 points; Moyvore 277; Kilbeggan 275; Kinnegad 272, and 271 apiece was the scores of Ballymore and Coole, while Drumcree and Castledaly each obtained 270.
For Crookedwood, the score was 268; for Ballykeeran, 266; for Finea, 261; for Loughnavalley, 257' for Mount Temple 251, for Ballinalack, 245, for Delvin, 243 and for Killucan-Rathwire, 208.
